The language, culture and heritage of Snowdonia
OUTCOME C1
The language, culture and heritage of Snowdonia is being celebrated supported and strengthened.
Scattered amongst monuments, castles and estates that make up the rich tapestry of the cultural landscape that is Eryri, you will find are a fleet of ruined farm buildings, their stories have been lost to many of us. During the Harlech and Ardudwy Heritage project from 2019 to 2022 we will be rediscovering and celebrating the cultural history found in these ruined buildings. We will also be supporting business owners in the town of Harlech to maintain works needed to the outside of their buildings. All the information collected during the project will be archived and shown digitally by the Authority and project partners; Gwynedd Archaeological Trust, Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, Peoples Collection and Cadw.
Stories of labourers and the poor are to be found in many of the ruins across Ardudwy and their stories are examples of life in rural Wales’s past. However, there are lessons for us today in discovering their histories, about living sustainably, traditional skills and land use. Language and culture are woven in the traditions of the families who lived, and still live, in the area and in the place names you hear across the landscape. Our cultural heritage is part of Eryri’s soul, and this project proves there is a wealth out there yet to be uncovered
